Event Summary

Copyright Alliance, In partnership with WALA and 14 other Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA) organizations across the U.S.—will host a webinar on the Copyright Claims Board (CCB), titled The Copyright Claims Board—What We Know So Far. 

There have been interesting developments and challenges that may help guide prospective CCB claimants and respondents and other interested parties regarding this new copyright small claims tribunal. 

Speakers include Maya Burchette, Attorney-Advisor for the CCB; Thomas Maddrey, Chief Legal Officer & Head of National Content and Education for the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP); and Terrica Carrington, Vice President of Legal Policy and Copyright Counsel at the Copyright Alliance. Panelists will take an in-depth look at how things are working with the CCB seven months after its launch by the U.S. Copyright Office. 

The panel, which will be moderated by Keith Kupferschmid, CEO of the Copyright Alliance, is a must-attend event for anyone who has been following or has an interest in the CCB.

Maya Burchette

Copyright Claims Attorney @U.S. Copyright Office

Maya Burchette is a Copyright Claims Attorney at the Copyright Office, where she works with copyright creators and users in navigating the new Copyright Claims Board. She spent 2022 assisting the Office in implementing the CASE Act. She joins the Copyright Claims Board after spending three years as a Copyright Examiner in the Visual Arts Department. Prior to joining the Copyright Office in 2018, Maya worked as an intellectual property associate at a boutique law firm in Washington, DC. She earned her JD from Tulane University School of Law and her BS from Howard University. In her free time, Maya enjoys watching live music and making homemade pasta.

Tom Maddrey

Chief Legal Officer & Head of National Content and Education @American Society of Media Photographers

Thomas Maddrey is the Chief Legal Officer & Head of National Content and Education for ASMP, the premier national trade association for visual creators. With over a decade of experience as a commercial and fine-art photographer, Thomas became an attorney to work with creators who, like himself, faced legal and business challenges each day of their careers. As part of his advocacy work, Thomas has authored more than a dozen amicus briefs, including being the Counsel of Record for multiple U.S. Supreme Court amicus briefs. Thomas obtained his law degree from the SMU Dedman School of Law, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Copyright Alliance, Texas Accounts and Lawyers for the Arts, and the Dallas Opera, in addition to holding the position of Section chair for the Entertainment, Art, and Sports Law section of the Dallas Bar Association.

Terrica Carrington

VP, Legal Policy and Copyright Counsel @Copyright Alliance

Terrica Carrington is VP, Legal Policy and Copyright Counsel at the Copyright Alliance. Since joining the Copyright Alliance in 2016, she has advocated before Congress, the U.S. Copyright Office, and other federal agencies on a number of legal and policy issues, including the Copyright Alternative in Small-Claims Enforcement Act (CASE Act), Copyright Office modernization, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), and other copyright-related matters. Terrica is also an adjunct professor at George Mason University School of Law, where she assists as a Supervising Attorney with the Arts & Entertainment Advocacy Clinic.

Keith Kupferschmid, Moderator

Chief Executive Officer @Copyright Alliance

Keith Kupferschmid is President and CEO of the Copyright Alliance, a position he has held since 2015. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Copyright Alliance’s operations—including strategy, government affairs, communications, membership, and liaising with boards and committees. Kupferschmid’s extensive work on the Hill has contributed to modernizing copyright law, culminating in the enactment of the Music Modernization Act (MMA), the Copyright Alternative in Small-Claims Enforcement Act (CASE Act), and the Protecting Lawful Streaming Act (PLSA), among others. He has also raised the profile of the Copyright Alliance within the creator community and strived to garner additional rights and protections for creators across the country through education, advocacy initiatives, and speaking opportunities.
