WALA’s Creative Entrepreneurs Series is a series for creatives of all kinds who want to take the next step in their professional career by creating their own business. Explore the basics of forming a business for your creative endeavors, from deciding whether to incorporate as a non-profit or for-profit entity, to understanding copyrights and trademarks, to contract and negotiation skills, and finally to taxes and understanding the grants process.
The series comprises of six sessions to be held on consecutive Mondays, starting Monday, September 20, 2021, and continuing through Monday, October 25, 2021 from 11am – 12:30pm.

Joshua J. Kaufman is a partner in the law firm of Venable LLP and chair of its Copyright, Art & Licensing Group. While Mr. Kaufman is based in the Washington, D.C. Mr. Kaufman has a national practice with clients throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. He specializes in art, copyright, licensing and media law. In his practice he assists his clients in negotiations, transactions, estate planning, art related tax issues as well as litigation. He has represented of artists and from up-and-coming artists to luminaries such as Robert Rauschenberg and David Hockney, scores of other established collectors among them collectors such as Joe Hirshhorn and dozens of publishers, licensing agents, and numerous galleries.
Mr. Kaufman is the founder of the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, DC (now known as WALA), and The Society to Prevent Trade in Stolen Art. He currently sits on the board of the Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts and is a member of the Smithsonian Council for American Arts. He was as a founding member of the DC Bars, Sport, Art and Entertainment Section. He was on the board of the Copyright Society of the USA (DC Chapter). He taught Art Law at the Corcoran School of Art and was an Adjunct Professor at American University Law School where for 29 years he taught Entertainment Law and Art Law. He has numerous reported cases as well as successfully arguing the landmark copyright/artist rights case, CCNV v. Reid, before the United States Supreme Court. He has published over 150 articles on art law issues and co-authored several books. He is an artist himself and put himself through college as the owner of an art gallery and law school as M.C. Escher’s first US distributor.
